Petscop - I just want to share my obsession with you

GUYS. SO,  I've recently found a series on YouTube called Petscop. I say recently, I mean last year. It's a "Let's play" format series of a what appears to be a Playstation 1 game titled Petscop. The user is also named Petscop. It's all Petscop. You may be asking, what are you talking about? Why is this so interesting? BECAUSE my children, the Petscop game does not exist. It is all in fact, an art project, or narrative created by an unknown person or team, and they have created a masterpiece. It's not known if the videos are animated to look like game, or if the game is being produced and programmed in real time, and the footage is someone actually playing the game. Whatever it may be, the whole this is shrouded in deep deep mystery. The beginning of the game seems to be a standard explore-collect affair; we are introduced to Paul, the player and narrator, who seems to be recording to prove that the game has hidden secrets. He speaks as if he...

Character Design - Start again

I'm in my studio today, in hopes to revive the stagnant pool of crativity before it dries out. I have alway wanted to get into character design. I live for it. So, sleeves up, I went to the library and got myself this: Character Design from the ground up - Kevin Crossley   Very informative although with not much stylistic versatilty, then again I only looked at the pictures and flicked through it so far. Today, whilst trying to write this, follow Sherlock and not eat my lunch at 10am, I was able to look more in depth into the book and trt sketching some characters out myself, but I have to say, I have drawn better. I find myself in the most horrendous art block, and I'm a bit lost on what to do. I followed all the wiki-how advice, cleaned my desk, had a walk, tired something new, but I'm still in the swamp.  UPDATE - 31/10/2018 It's halloween and I'm feeling a whole lot better! My nails are on point and I've drawn a character I'm actually pleas...

Liverpool Biennial 2018 - A breif look at art right now

Where can I start. Well, here is a picture of the Tate lights.   Cool. Now here's a picture of the first exibit I saw in the Biennial.   This is Haegue Yang's, and it looked colourful and fancy. And that's all I got from it. As I explored the Biennial and tried my best to take it all in, I couldn't help but feel a lingering dissapointment. Not in the festival, as I wasn't in town long enough to appreciate it fully, and I'm sure it would have been great. But dissapointment in the art that hung on the walls and stood in the middle of busy rooms, art that I once loooked at and admired now is hollow and devoid of a point. The more I research the more I find that the "Process" is the primary focus of art. I don't believe it should. Michelangelo didn't mess about when he carved David out of his marble prison, and we didn't care about his thoughts as he made it, we care about the moment we see him, at the end of...

Music videos - Still don't have a clue what I'm doing

Like any other human being, I enjoy things. One of those this is a good tune. What goes with a good tune? A decent set of visuals. " A  music video  is a  short film  that integrates a  song  with imagery, and is produced for  promotional  or  artistic  purposes. Modern music videos are primarily made and used as a  marketing  device intended to promote the sale of  music recordings . There are also cases where songs are used in  tie-in  marketing campaigns that allow them to become more than just a song. Tie-ins and merchandising can be used for toys or for food or other products. Although the origins of the music video date back to  musical short films  that first appeared in the 1920s, they again came into prominence in the 1980s when the channel  MTV  (originally "Music Television") based their format around the medium. Prior to the 1980s, these kinds of videos were described by vari...

Databending

Databending is glitch art, essentially. "Databending (or data bending ) is the process of manipulating a media file of a certain format, using software designed to edit files of another format. Distortions in the medium typically occur as a result, and the process either falls under a broader category of, or is frequently employed in glitch art." Here are some examples: Using the audio software Audacity I made some glitch art too, with help from Beyonce, her majesty: Original       I'm gonna experiment with different effects: Leveler Fade Out Pitch Change Echo - My fave!

Aesthetics - Anna Cattish and Nana

On the visual side of things, I have been following instagrammer Anna Cattish for visual reserch. Her Instagram.     She created a character named Nana the Shrimp, and gave her her own instagram,  here.   With the collaboration of music producer DZA , they created an audiovisual album, "Fake ID". Colourblindness - The other side of the coin

So in my prevous post, I talked about people who see colours that don't exist; here I'm gonna talk about people who can't see any. I'm struggling today because my fingers are freezeing so that's cool. Wiki drops it like: " Color blindness , also known as color vision deficiency , is the decreased ability to see color or differences in color. Simple tasks such as selecting ripe fruit, choosing clothing, and reading traffic lights can be more challenging.Color blindness may also make some educational activities more difficult. However, problems are generally minor, and most people find that they can adapt. People with total color blindness (achromatopsia) may also have decreased visual acuity and be uncomfortable in bright environments." I would like to talk about Neil Harbisson, an artist who is completley colour blind that has an antenna implanted in his skull, that sends different pitches through the bone depending on what colour he places in front ...

Synesthesia - crosswires that make people super cool

What is synesthesia? Well I didn't know much about it up until a few weeks ago, when I really started to look into it, and I have to say, its a lot. Let me drop the wiki definition here: "Synesthesia is a perceptual phenomenon in which stimulation of one sensory or cognitive pathway leads to automatic, involuntary experiences in a second sensory or cognitive pathway." So basically, its people who can see music and taste words and stuff like that. When I first read about it, it sounded fake. But then I fell in the TED Talks rabbit hole and I relised it was actually real, so I went to the library and I found this book: The Hidden Sense : Synesthesia in Art and Science - Cretien Van Cmpen - 2007 Unfortunatley I didn't really find out much didn't alredy know so it wasn't much use, but I did find out about an american artists Melissa McCracken who paints the songs she listens to. The embedding doesn't work here, despite my multiple efforts, so here...

Audiovisual - The foundations

To keep things brief, I would like my project to be audiovisual. I'm aware that my ideas might change and I might want to do something else depending on how the research goes, but for now, I think this is a decent place to start. To begin, here is the Wiki definition, so we get that out of the way: "Audiovisual ( AV ) means possessing both a sound and a visual component, such as slide-tape presentations, films, television programs, church services and live theater productions." As it's fairly easy to grasp what audiovisual is, basically everything, I decided to have a look at some books and found just what I needed: Cinema and the audiovisual imagination - Robert Robetrson - 2015 What struck me most was a chapter in which Roberts brings up two occasions in 20th century cinema where the audio complimenetd and contrasted the visual to make the overall atmosphere of the scene in question more emotion; in both cases, stress and unease. The first occurs in the...

I have to start somewhere.

So. I shall begin by syaing that typing is one of my main pet peeves, so starting a blog is a pretty stupid idea. HOWEVER. In previous years I have found that copy-pasting information on a blog is a really easy way to keep track of things. even if they don't really connect or make sense. I will begin my blog, today of all days, with a chill mindset. Keyword is chill. As I am the least chill person. I already have some notes which I will copy here, in a way that follows a flow, maybe... I don't even know. Is my uncertainty that obvious? The aim for this is to be honest and direct, removing any barriers between me, my thoughts and what I write; and all being well, it'll work and I'll get better at typing things and being chill. Stay tuned, my dudes.
